This was masterful work of art. Slow and building it starts to piece about a father and a son. Often misunderstanding in our life cause us pain and heartache. That first boy or girl that broke your heart, or that time you felt slighted because no one showed up at your little league game. As we grow into people it’s easy for the little slights which can often seem the most painful at the time to grow into a festering wound. Unlike the hurt of a broken arm the sting of a broken expectation or promise won’t go away with a sling and a lollipop from the doctor. Hank Palmer ( Robert Downey Jr ) is a high powered big city lawyer, obsessed with money and winning. His father Joseph is played by ( Robert Duvall ) is a judge from a small town. Father and son are driven apart by competitiveness and what seems to be a unloving relationship between a father who wants the best and a son in need of approval. However Hank is pulled back to the small town he’s run away from when his mother passes away, and soon he’s forced to stay there as his father gets himself into legal trouble when he is put on trial for hitting a former scumbag he sentence with his car. The emotion is tense and believable -- There are typical grand standing scenes in some of the legal drama and it’s not really even so much about the case as it is about a man having to face his demons and exploring the relationship between a father and son. I thought it was poignant and believable how destructive some people can be, but yet miraculous and inspiring how some people can overcome.
